Glossary: Powering Net Zero
Net Zero
Achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gases emitted and the amount removed from the atmosphere, resulting in no net increase in emissions.
Carbon Footprint
The total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event, or product, measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e).
Renewable Energy
Energy generated from natural resources that are constantly replenished, such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Technology that captures carbon dioxide emissions from sources like power plants and stores it underground to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Energy Efficiency
Using less energy to perform the same task or produce the same outcome, thereby reducing waste and emissions.
Decarbonization
The process of reducing carbon dioxide emissions through the adoption of low-carbon technologies and practices.
Green Hydrogen
Hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources through electrolysis, resulting in zero carbon emissions.
Electrification
Replacing technologies that use fossil fuels with electric alternatives to reduce emissions.
Carbon Neutral
Achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by balancing emissions with carbon removal or offsetting.
